As many of you know, Patrick George, the EIC of Jalopnik, is stepping down today from the company to take another position at another group . Even though he’ll still be around at his next gig and on Twitter, I feel a bit emotional about his move. Not like crying or anything, just more emotional than “meh”.
Why, you ask? Because Patrick George has been at worst instrumental and at best paramount in keeping OppositeLock safe from those that wanted to nix the site. If you’re reading this, thank PG for being able to. If any of your past posts had been cross posted to Jalopnik (a huge honor, as far as I’m concerned), thank PG. If you feel a sense of community here, thank PG.
So here’s to you, Mr. George! Thanks for being a great guy, a great boss, and a shitty Camero driver. Cheers, and Hook ‘Em.

Thanks for not banning Mergio (or me) when FCA complained.

This right here is a testament to PG’s awesomeness. A more lazy EIC would just shut it down and not have another thought about it. Not Patrick.

thank you patrick george! may your endeavors elsewhere in the world be of a great success.
if this little water logged forum finally sinks, we appreciate whatever hand bailing you did to keep it above water for a little longer.

Also, the fact that he did give a route by which to tell automotive PR peple to fuck off.
RIP Mergio, and Sergio.

In that split second, he knows that GM will never let him near another one of their cars ever again. That’s the pain you see. Or joy, depending on his thoughts of GM vehicles now.

Wasn’t he once in incarcerated in Virginia as a political prisoner?

I thought he was doing a Conan O’Brian impression.

I missed this episode. Well-played. Absolutely well-played.

Yes he was, and it made for a fantastic write up. I’m happy he made it out without having to join a gang.

I really appreciate what he and Torch have kept going. Keep the freak flag flying, y’all.

But, are we SURE he didn’t join a prison gang? The first rule of being in a prison gang is NEVER talk about your prison gang...

Patrick’s attitude towards cars, brands, and so many other things has been such a perfect fit for Jalopnik. He also has a very keen understanding of the relationshi p between authors and commenters, and has utilized that knowledge to great benefit here in Kinjaland . And of course I gotta thank him for sharing a couple of my Oppo posts to the front page, as well as recruiting me to be a guest contributor on a proper Jalopnik article. It was 100% my pleasure!

Cheers and thanks Patrick....make sure you stick around Oppo once and awhile after you leave! :)

This is well written, completely accurate, and absolutely deserved.
Thanks PG

He’s done good stuff at Jalopnik. Sad to see him go.
On the other hand, he deleted the tweet where he admitted being For Sweden, but don’t worry, Oppo still remembers: I am Patrick George AMA

Thats my abiding impression.

I’m not sure why, he was the next in a long line of journalists getting in over their head when driving press cars.

RIP Mergio and Sergio. I think you having Mergio try to get Fancy Kristen to buy FCA will always be one of the highlights of this site to me

IIRC, the real rub on GM’s side was Jalopnik publishing a scoop on an upcoming car. But, uh, that’s what Jalopnik does. The leaked information was news! Jalopnik is a news site that didn’t agree to an embargo on that information! It is their job to publish the news!
A competent marketing/PR/comms squad would realize that their side had a leak and they need to do better in the future about keeping confidential information on future products secure. But this is GM we’re talking about here, so they held their screw-up against Jalopnik for a while against all reason and sense. PG eatin’ wall was the last straw.
There are a lot of journos that crash and crunch cars. There are also a lot of “ journalists” who will unquestionably gargle whatever balls the OEMs want them to, and write uncritically accordingly. Landing in the “does crunch” half of that Venn diagram without being in the overlapping part of the circle is always going to be a slightly worse time, I’m sure.

Best line ever written. Really though, all embargoes are dumb.

Dearest Oppo,
Though you often drove me up the wall, and I had to deal with more than a few copyright/legal/what-do-we-do-with-these-people issues thanks to you, I always loved you and respected you.
This is such a deeply weird and special corner of Car Internet. And even though it was well out of my hands, I miss the days when we actively shared your work. (You should’ve been paid for it, is what I think there.) Please take care of yourselves and continue your support of the FP, if you do that already.
I’m also going to shitpost here. P robably a lot.
Cheers,
PG

If you didn’t shitpost, I’d be horribly disappointed.
Again, if you ever make it to Houston and want to go grab a beer with a non-axe murderer (despite anyone’s ironic Kinja handle), let me know. Hardigree follows me on Twitter, so I obviously can’t be THAT bad.

Say, I’ve been meaning to ask ( I guess it never felt like the right time to bring it up) ... I’ve noticed some of your comments in recent months were somehow NOT pinned among the “staff” comments in some posts. What’s up with that? Another case of Kinja gonna kinja? Or did you somehow gain the ability (some kind of downgrade?) to participate in discussions without Kinja automatically putting those replies in the spotlight? Cuz that’s actually something I’ve wished that I could do from time to time on my own posts.
